Geography
Laingsburg Municipality (LM) is a Category B Municipality in the Central Karoo District and is the smallest municipality in the Western Cape. It includes Matjiesfontein, Vleiland,
Laingsburg and 250 Farms (e.g. Baviaan, Hillandale, Koringplaas, Koup, Pieter Meintjies, Rouxpos, Seweweekspoort). It is adjacent to
the N1 national road and is accessible to all the major centres of the Western Cape and from the Northern Cape, Eastern Cape, Free State and Gauteng. The Municipality covers an area of 8 781 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 7 330 people.
Business sectors
The construction and finance sectors within Laingsburg experienced the sharpest annual average growth over the 2001 to 2009 period, at 8.1% and 8.0% respectively. These sectors are followed by community services (3.3%), electricity (2.5%) and the agricultural sector (2.2%). The manufacturing sector contracted by an annual average rate of 1.2% over the same period.
The leading sector contributors to Laingsburg’s economy in 2009 were agriculture (25.0%), finance (35%), community services (18%) and construction (2%). Agriculture’s contribution to the local economy decreased from 25.4 to 22.1% between 2001 and 2009. The finance sector’s contribution increased from 25.6 to 34.7% between 2001 and 2009 whilst the community services sector’s contribution decreased from 18.8 to 17.9%.
